As human beings, we tend to get stressed out and feeling anxious at times. These are maybe because of some certain things we have to deal in our day to day life. And there are times as well that we have encountered the feeling of nausea at some point in time. These are facts that we have to accept as human beings. But is it possible that the feeling of anxiety can cause nausea to a person? This article will look more into this belief and try to know more facts.

Before we proceed further, let’s try to understand more of what anxiety is and what nausea is. By definition, anxiety is a psychological and behavioral state when a person an unpleasant feeling of distress which is usually termed as “worry” or “worrying.” On the other hand, nausea is a horrible feeling where a person has the involuntary urge to vomit. The person may vomit or can only feel the vomiting feeling. It is often identified as “feeling sick.”

The association of anxiety to nausea may seem peculiar in the sense that anxiety is a mood that can be felt by a person emotionally while nausea tends to be more of a physical sensation of a person. But some instances being worried can cause a sickening feeling. Nausea can be triggered by certain situations of anxiety like:

Stress or fear - this is a type of anxiety that can arise when a person worries about the future, where to find money to pay the bills, or even when a child is bullied at the school.

Over-excitement – this is a good type of anxiety because the person who feels this often excites about an anticipated event such as a wedding, long-planned vacation trip with the family, the college graduation, or even the birth of a first-born child.

Social Anxiety – this is often a worrying felt if a person arrives at a party and doesn’t know anyone, or if someone just recently transferred to a new neighborhood or school and have to introduce himself or herself to the new people. There is that fear of ‘not being accepted’ and the fear of being an outcast.

Performance anxiety – this is commonly felt in times of important function when a person has to speak in front of an audience. The fear is more described as the person afraid to commit any blunders that might affect the outcome of the performance.

How can anxiety affect our system and cause us to feel nauseated? According to studies, emotions can trigger a physical response to our body. When we get angry, usually our heart beats faster, and we tend to feel our blood rushing through our veins. When we are sad not only will we feel a depressing and sometimes hurting feeling, but we also noticed tears falling from our eyes at times. These neuroendocrine changes triggered by emotional inputs often affect the systems in our body, such as the digestive system. Like the feeling of anxiety increases, there’s a chemical overdrive in the body which can cause immediate gastrointestinal distress. That’s why the more anxious a person will be, the more possible he will experience stomachaches, nausea, and vomiting.

In conclusion, there is a fact that anxiety can cause nausea. It is affected by the chemical changes in the body that disrupt the way our system functions normally. Although this theory may have been proven, this does not apply to all as there are others who are tougher in handling anxious situations.
